Everyone likes candles. They add a certain special effect to the room that borders on charm and the mysterious. But candles are a major source of accidental fires in American homes. A few simple steps can reduce greatly the chance of accidental fire by candles. Never put lighted candles near flammable objects or materials. Keep candles away from children unless they are under the supervision of an adult. Before placing a lighted candle, imagine this. What would happen if the candle fell? What nearby materials or objects could catch fire? What would happen if the candle burns almost to completion, bursts its glass holder, and allows hot wax and flame to spread? Place the candle in a location where any of these accidents won't result in the spread of fire.
